PAC money is not hidden money. Political action committees register with the FEC, itemize their donors and file on a schedule. You can click through and read the names. That is the opposite of dark money, which is 501(c)(4) spending whose donors are never disclosed, never touches a candidate’s committee, and therefore does not appear anywhere on this page.
The two cut lines are our decision, not a fact. We flag #PAC_FUNDED at 40% of receipts and #HIGH_PAC_SHARE at 60%. A reasonable person could pick 35% or 50%. Both numbers were declared in advance on the published methodology page, and the raw percentage always renders next to the flag so you can draw your own line.
A high share is not a wrongdoing. It is a fact about where money came from. What it means is yours to decide — that is the entire point of publishing it this way.
Coverage is uneven and we say so. Where an official has no 2026-cycle filing we print “no filing on record,” never $0. A confident-looking zero would be a lie the data can’t support.
